Slim SAS SFF-8654

Slim SAS SFF-8654

The Slim SAS SFF-8654 cable is a next-generation internal/external interconnect standardized for PCIE 4.0 (16GT/s) and SAS-4 (22.5Gbps), while remaining backward compatible with PCIE 3.0, SAS-3 (12Gbps), and SAS-2 (6Gbps). Physically smaller than both SFF-8643 (internal) and SFF-8644 (external), the SFF-8654 supports up to 8 lanes (8x wide port) in a single connector — doubling the per-cable bandwidth of older Mini SAS HD variants. It is designed for high-density servers, NVME SSD back planes, and external JBOD enclosures. The connector comes in two broad types: 4-lane (SFF-8654, 38-pin) and 8-lane (SFF-8654, 74-pin). With Tri-Mode capability, a single 8654 cable can carry SAS, SATA, and PCIE (NVME) traffic. For external connections

Key Features

  • 8-Lane Support (74-pin version): Up to 8 lanes per connector - 64Gbps (PCIE 4.0 x8) or 180Gbps (SAS-4)
  • 4-Lane Support (38-pin version): Compact 4-lane interconnect for space-constrained internal routing
  • PCIE 4.0 + SAS-4 Capable: 16GT/s (PCIE 4.0) and 22.5Gbps (SAS-4) with backward compatibility
  • Tri-Mode Native: Carries SAS, SATA, and NVME protocols over the same cable when used with Tri-Mode controllers
  • Small Form Factor: 25-35% smaller than SFF-8643/8644 connectors, enabling high port density
  • Internal (no latch) and External (metal latch) Variants: Same connector footprint, different retention
  • Hot-Pluggable: Standard SAS/SATA/NVME hot-swap support on capable back planes

Product Selling Points

1. 8-Lanes in One Slim Connector - Double the Bandwidth per Port
Legacy SFF-8643/8644 cables max out at 4 lanes (4x). The SFF-8654 74-pin version delivers 8 lanes in a connector 30% smaller. Benefit: A single cable now carries PCIE 4.0 x8 (128Gbps) or SAS-4 wide port (180Gbps) - perfect for dual-port NVME SSDS or high-density external JBODs. Evidence: Standard on Broadcom 9600-24i, 9600-16i Tri-Mode HBAs.

2. Mixed Protocol Support - One Cable, Any Drive
Use the same cable for SAS HDDS, SATA SSDS, and NVME U.2/U.3 drives. No re-cabling when you change drive technology. Benefit: Simplify inventory - one part number for all connections.

3. Internal or External - Same Connector Family
Internal SFF-8654 cables have a small plastic latch for routing inside servers. External versions add a rugged metal latch, EMI fingers, and pull tab. Benefit: You can use the same PCB footprint for both internal and external applications, just by choosing the appropriate mating connector. Evidence: Dell Power Edge 15G, HPE ProLiant Gen11, Supermicro X13 use SFF-8654 for both.

4. 85Ω Options for PCIE 4.0 (16GT/s) Signal Integrity
SFF-8654 can be built with 85Ω differential impedance (PCIE spec) or 100Ω (SAS spec). For NVME direct-attach back planes, 85Ω cables maintain eye opening at 16GT/s. Benefit: No signal loss or margin reduction when using PCIE 4.0 SSDS.

5. Length-Matched Pairs for NVME Dual-Port Redundancy
For dual-port NVME, you must maintain identical electrical length across redundant paths. SFF-8654 cables can be built with precision length matching (timestamped or measured). Benefit: No performance penalty in active-active dual-port configurations.

Star Reviews From Customers

1.Mike R., DevOps Hardware in Virginia
"Broad com 9600-24i + 24-bay U.3 backplane. Used 8-lane SFF-8654 for each 4-drive group. 74-pin connector feels small but latched positively. PCIE 4.0 negotiated at full 16GT/s per lane. Runs warm but well within spec. 0.6m length perfect."

2.Jessie L., Storage Architect in Texas
"NVME over Fabric test lab. Used 5m external SFF-8654 copper cables between server and JBOD. Full 8-lane SAS-4 (22.5Gbps) - no CRC errors in 3-day run. Metal latch is smaller than SFF-8644 but still feels solid."

3.Sarah K., Server OEM in Taiwan
"Gen 11 server internal. Motherboard SFF-8654 to backplane SFF-8654. The right-angle plug on the motherboard side cleared a crowded DIMM area. Mass production order of 0.5m flat 8-lane - consistent crimp quality and impedance."

4.Dave P., Broadcast Storage in New York
"8K editing SAN. Controller to flash enclosure - 20m active optical SFF-8654. Ran through ceiling cable tray with CAT6 and power - no interference. 8 lanes at 16GT/s PCIE, full bandwidth for multi-stream Avid playback."

5.Priya K., HPC Storage in India
"Lustre parallel file system. 8-lane 8654 connecting head nodes to NVME target. 3m copper cables, 85Ω version for PCIE 4.0. Very small bend radius - fit inside crowded 2U chassis. Cost less than optical at this distance."
